Starting a new job is usually exciting and a little nerve-wracking. You have a lot to learn, new colleagues to get to know, and a lot of information to digest. On top of that, you want to make a good impression—but how do you do that? We have tips to help you become an exemplary new employee!
Take your time
Get up extra early to avoid stress on your first day. It's always good to have a little leeway both at home and on your way to work. You don't want to be late on your first day! Also, take the time to think about what you want to wear and check if your new workplace has a dress code.
The right mindset
Everyone has been “the new kid” at work. You may be thinking about being the first to arrive at the office or the last to leave. Don't dwell on these thoughts. Don't be afraid to ask questions—you'll learn how things work faster and get to know your colleagues better.
Participate in activities
Have a coffee with a colleague, accept lunch invitations, and say yes when your boss asks if you want to join a meeting. It may feel a little intimidating at first, but it will help you learn the social codes of the workplace and get to know your new colleagues.
What is expected of you?
Perhaps you are afraid of asking a “stupid” question? This is often related to not knowing what is expected of you. If you are unsure about what is expected of you, ask your manager to clarify this for you. Tell them that you are asking because you want to do the best job possible.
Note
The first few days usually involve a lot of new information, so make sure you have a notepad or laptop available for the first few days and write down as much as possible. This shows that you are interested, but also makes learning easier and allows you to note down questions immediately.
In addition, you won't have to ask twice, which saves both you and your colleagues time.
Take the initiative
Taking the initiative is usually appreciated. But of course, you should only take on what you feel you can actually handle. If you are unsure, investigate the matter yourself first and ask for help in the next step.
Clear your personal calendar
Being new at work often requires energy. Therefore, don't schedule too many energy-consuming activities after work during the first few weeks. Instead, plan time for rest and relaxation and make sure you stick to it. Arriving at work well-rested for the first time is the best gift you can give yourself as a new employee!

It's brave to challenge yourself!
Finally, and we cannot emphasize this enough, challenging yourself is both courageous and empowering. Just as it can sometimes be challenging to take initiative, it can also be challenging to ask for help. And if you get the help you need, don't forget to say thank you!
Good luck in your new job!
